slave narrative

There are some events that happen throughout our lives that will forever be implanted in our minds. We feel like the world is ending with certain experiences. We feel as if the "stars don't shine as bright as they used to" because the innocence you had before was gone right when the experience was done. Sarah Gudger, a slave at the age of 121 wrote about what she felt when her mother was taken away from her as a child. She explained how watching her mom being taken away felt like they were taking her innocence along with her mom. She felt as if her whole world was turned upside down. While we go through life there are certain matters that alter our perspective on the world and on our life, we are the ones who decide whether to move on or dwell in our own pity and let that experience define your life.

When acts of slavery were taking place, the separation of families was very common, kids were forced to live without their parents. Slaves were given very harsh treatment, they were treated as if they were not human. That alone can traumatize a person and make the whole world around them seem dull and terrifying. Sarah Gudger described the last memory she had of her mom and articulated that after her mom was gone, she was left alone and her world was dim, the stars didn't have the shine they did when her mom was with her. The stars can be viewed as a metaphor for her life, claiming that when her mom was gone and her being a slave altered the way she viewed life and she was never able to overcome those feelings.

The time that we live in now can certainly change the way an individual views not only their own life but the world around them. There are things in life that can be extremely scarring, I have never experienced something scarring in my life but there are moments when I go through things and I feel as if my whole world is ending but I am able to pick myself up and continue with my life in hopes that it gets better. In modern day something as simple as watching the news and logging on to social media can transform our way of thinking. With current events involving politics and the state in which our world is in is something implanted in our minds. We can choose to make a change or stay as we are and let it take over our life.

There are levels in which situations are put. Some may be simple and take less time to overcome or they may cause lots of impact thus making the trauma harder to dismiss or at least subdue. Sarah Gudger was a slave and experienced the day to day life of a slave therefore her trauma must have been difficult to overcome which is understandable but you can't let that define your whole life. She could have done something to fulfill the void that was left in her when her mom was gone, which at the time she lived in could have been having a child. There are different ways everyone deals with their problems, it is up to them to decide what they'll do with it.
